The Texas Longhorns have undergone a substantial makeover since Steve Sarkisian took over the program in January of 2021. And in just two short years and change, they look ready to compete for a Big 12 Championship.

Now, from top to bottom, the Longhorns' roster seems to be bursting with NFL talent, the likes of which hasn't been seen in Austin since Mack Brown's heyday.

One major spot the Longhorns have lacked that talent over the last decade has been at the quarterback spot, where Sam Ehlinger was the lone bright spot at a position that was otherwise mired in mediocrity.

And according to college football analyst Andy Staples, for the first time in a long time, that weakness has now turned into a strength.

“It’s possible the Longhorns have multiple future NFL QBs on the roster," Staples said That hasn’t been the case lately.”

That talent pool under center is of course led by starter Quinn Ewers, who looks poised for a breakout season in his second year. However, the Longhorns also have a player who looks to be just as, if not even more physically talented than Ewers in Maalik Murphy, who seems to be starting to come into his own as the backup, and maybe future starter.

Then, of course, the Longhorns signed five-star phenom Arch Manning as part of the 2023 class, who could end up being the best out of the bunch.

However, that is not the only place where the Longhorns have made drastic improvements. In fact, according to Staples, the program is now bursting with NFL talent at multiple positions

“Left tackle Kelvin Banks looks like a future first-rounder, and he’s only a sophomore," Staples said. "Xavier Worthy and Georgia transfer AD Mitchell should lead an explosive receiving corps.”

“If we include tight end JT Sanders–possibly the Longhorns’ best 2024 NFL draft prospect–in the group, it gets even deeper. … Remember, 2022 Wyoming transfer Isaiah Neyor never got to show what he could do last season because of an injury suffered in preseason camp. He’s back, too.”

The result? Texas Looks ready to compete at the highest level, and considering they're heading into the SEC in a little over 12 months, that is good news for Horns fans everywhere. So, is Texas back? No. Not Yet.

But, they are certainly on pace to be, if they can stay out of their own way, and accomplish the goals of which many believe they are capable.

“Texas has a roster that looks more competitive than any Texas roster has looked in years," Staples said. "Does that mean the Longhorns are back? We’ll leave such declarations to (Urban) Meyer for now, but let’s just say the optimism is understandable.”
