CFP Bound? Analyst Predicts Longhorns As Playoff Contender

The expectations for the Longhorns seem to be growing by the day.

The Texas Longhorns are coming off an 8-5 season, with all five of their losses coming by eight points or less. But now, despite losing their best offensive player in Bijan Robinson, and arguably their top defensive player in DeMarvion Overshown, the expectations have continued to shoot through the roof.

First, it began with the Longhorns being elevated into the post-spring top-10 by 247Sports. They have also been predicted as Big 12 title favorites by other outlets.

But now, the expectations have risen to a whole new level, with 247Sports analyst Brad Crawford projecting the Longhorns to make the College Football Playoff as the No. 3 overall seed, where they would face none other than the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first semi-final.

Projected matchup: No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 3 Texas

With a win at Alabama in Week 2, the early-season College Football Playoff buzz will center on Texas. Will the Longhorns handle the pressure if they take out the Crimson Tide? That's the biggest question. Aside from the November showdown with LSU, this is Alabama's most important game and it happens to come early for new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and a first-year starter at quarterback. Quinn Ewers is a potential 2024 first-round draft pick, so right now, Texas has a clear advantage at the most important position on the field, unlike last season's game. Meanwhile, second-seeded Ohio State needs no introduction.

Whether or not the Longhorns can live up to those expectations, is another matter entirely.

Yes, they have arguably the best wide receiver room in the country, and maybe the best offensive line in the Big 12 protecting Quinn Ewers. They also have one of the most talented defenses in the conference.

That said, the road starts in Tuscaloosa for Steve Sarkisian and company in Week 2 against the Alabama Crimson Tide
