Texas Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers named Davey O’Brien Award Semifinalist

Even despite missing a couple games this season, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is up for a major award.

It has been quite the day in Quinn Ewers' world, as on top of news breaking that he is likely returning to Austin next season rather than declaring for the draft, he also was named a semifinalist for a prestigious award.

In a release on Tuesday, the Davey O'Brien Foundation announced their semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award. An award that is given every year to the best quarterback in the entire country.

If Ewers were to win the award, he would be the fourth Longhorn to do so in program history. He would join Texas' two last great quarterbacks Vince Young (2005) and Colt McCoy (2009) to win the award, while also joining former running back Earl Campbell (1977) when the award used to be given to the best player in the southwest at that time.

Ewers has led Texas to a 7-1 record this season with Maalik Murphy filling in when Ewers was injured to make it 9-1 on the year for the Longhorns, who are in the midst of their best season since McCoy was behind center. The current Texas starter has taken major strides since last season, as he is a much more efficient passer and has also shown a dramatic improvement in things such as footwork and his ability to throw the deep ball.

On the year through the eight games he has played, Ewers has thrown for over 2,300 yards, 14 touchdowns to four interceptions, while compiling a QBR of 78.4. He has also shown an ability to create with his legs a bit, as he has rushed for five touchdowns this season.

In terms of what is next for Ewers and the other 19 quarterbacks that are being considered, the next step is for the selection of the award's three finalists which are chosen based on voting from the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee and a round of the Davey O'Brien Fan Vote.

The three finalists will be revealed on Tuesday, Nov. 28, with the winner being announced on Friday, Dec. 8, during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
