Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers Nominated for Manning Award

Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers was named to the preseason watch list that honors the nation's top collegiate quarterback which includes postseason play, the Manning Award.

The Texas Longhorns have not secured the Manning Award since Colt McCoy was honored in 2009. However, current Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers may have the opportunity to end the Longhorns' 14-year-long drought in receiving the award.

On Tuesday, Ewers was named to the preseason watch list that honors the nation's top collegiate quarterback which includes postseason play, the Manning Award.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl created this award in honor of the collegiate football achievements of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.

However, Ewers is not the only one fans will need to keep a close eyes on in the coming months. USC's Caleb Williams and North Carolina's Drake Maye are also in the running for the award, and Ewers will need to compete against 21 quarterbacks total for the victorious slot.

Ewers will need a stand-out season in order to be a realistic competitor for the Manning Award this upcoming season.

In 10 games last season, Ewers completed 58.1 percent (172-of-296) of his passes for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. His total passing yardage marked the fifth-most all time total yards for a Texas freshman, and 22nd-most in Texas Longhorn football program history. As far as his total touchdowns, Ewers ranks at No. 4 in a season for a Longhorn freshman.

Texas played Washington in the Alamo Bowl game to end the football season last year. Even though the Longhorns ended the year with a 27-20 loss, Ewers had a standout game. He connected on 31-of-47 passes for a total of 369 yards and one touchdown, recording career highs for completions and passing yards.

In the matchups that Ewers started in and was not forced to leave the game early due to an injury, the Longhorns went 6-3.

The winner of the Manning Award will be selected by a voting panel, including the national media and each of the Manning quarterbacks following the conclusion of the bowl games.
