Texas Reportedly May Not Partake In Home-and-Homes With Big 12 Programs In The Future

The Texas Longhorns will officially be joining the SEC in 2024.

The Texas Longhorns will be sporting a new conference patch on their chest in 2024, as they will finally be making the long-awaited jump to the SEC.

They were able to leave the Big 12 on a high note, winning the conference one final time and for the first time since 2009.

While programs around the Big 12 like Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, or Iowa State may have had hopes of meeting up with the Longhorns somewhere down the line, recent comments made by athletic director Chris Del Conte indicate it's unlikely.

Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian holds up the Big 12 Football Championship trophy following the Oklahoma State University Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023.

When asked by 247Sports' Chip Brown if he sees Texas playing any Big 12 foes in the future, Del Conte explained it will be dependent on how many conference games Texas plays in the SEC. He also revealed that it would depend on the Big 12 program's willingness to come to Austin, hinting that Texas may not be willing to return a trip back against the respective program.

It was reported on Wednesday following De Conte's comments that the SEC will eventually be shifting to a nine-game season in 2026, meaning they'll only have room for three non-conference games.

According to FBschedule.com, Texas already has three out-of-conference foes on the docket until 2027, which technically means something could be worked out down the line but it would also be dependent on the Big 12 program's schedules.

They do however have a home-and-home scheduled with Arizona State who is a new Big 12 member, set for 2032 and 2033 with the Longhorns heading to Tempe for the first meeting, and the Sun Devils coming to Austin for the second.

As for teams like Texas Tech, Baylor, or Oklahoma State, fans may need to wait a while before they meet again, or the teams will have to meet in the College Football Playoff.
