There have only been six different teams to hoist the trophy as winners of the College Football Playoff, but with the expansion from four to 12 teams there is a possibility that a new team will join the party.

One of the teams that came close recently was the Texas Longhorns. They ended up making it to the College Football Playoff this past season, and while they didn't win their playoff game they were able to keep their game close. Something that has been quite rare in the four-team playoff. With the playoff expanding and the Longhorns appearing to be reaching a new level in year four of the Steve Sarkisian era, many fans and analysts alike, including ESPN's Greg McElroy, are confident that Texas can win it all.

“So for that one I’m going to go with the Texas Longhorns," said McElroy. "Now (Steve Sarkisian) has it cooking. You could make a case that they had the most complete team in the sport last year. Now, while it will be a significant step up in competition week to week in the SEC, I think Texas’ resources, understanding of NIL, an innovative coach that has been really excellent in the portal and the recruiting trail, it just feels like for Texas it’s only a matter of time before they win a national championship yet again.”

The last time the Longhorns were the last team standing was when Vince Young galloped into the corner of the end zone. Winning a title would return the program to prominence that they have been chasing for nearly 20 years.

They also have a chance to begin to assert themselves as the next dynasty in college football if they are in fact able to win the title and sustain success. 2024 will be a benchmark year for Texas, and will really determine if the program is capable of being what it once was.
