UCLA Basketball: Former Bruin and NBA Coach Visits Team Ahead of Battle With Villanova

Former UCLA guard visits his alma mater prior to the Bruins' huge matchup.

The UCLA Bruins are gearing up for a crucial matchup against the Villanova Wildcats with hopes of securing their sixth win of the season. Ahead of the game, the Bruins received a visit from a notable alum and Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach, Rico Hines.

Hines, who donned the UCLA jersey from 1997 to 2002, might not have flashy stats, but his contributions to the program are undeniable. His impact extends beyond his playing days, particularly with the renowned "Rico Hines runs." These pick-up games, held at UCLA, attract top-tier talent from around the world, a testament to Hines's influence.

While Hines didn't have the opportunity to pursue a professional playing career, his coaching journey has been impressive. He began as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors from 2006 to 2010, transitioned to college basketball as an assistant at St. John's from 2010 to 2015, took on a role in the NBA G League from 2016 to 2019, and has been back in the NBA since 2020.

Seeing Hines show support for his alma mater is a heartening reminder of the lasting connections and impact former players and coaches can have on the programs they once called home. Moments like these reinforce the sense of community within the UCLA basketball family.
