In this story:

Trey McKenney, a junior small forward at Saint Mary’s High School in Detroit, is a highly sought-after future prospect. Accordingly, your USC Trojans have tendered an offer his way.

In a fascinating new breakdown, Donovan James of USA Today/Trojans Wire unpacks McKenney's game and the Trojans' chances at landing the 6'4" swingman.

Voted as Michigan's Division I Player of the Year in 2022, McKenney averaged 25.4 points and 11.1 boards during his 2022-23 sophomore season.

McKenney is currently considered the No. 15 player among his 2025 high school class by 247Sports, and the No. 12 player in the site's composite rankings. In either ranking, he is regarded as the No. 2 overall player in his state.

Per James, Alabama, Arizona State, Florida State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Miami (FL), Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Stanford, TCU and Texas are just some of USC's competition for McKenney's services.

When the 2023-24 season kicks off, USC will field its top-rated recruiting class ever, headlined by guards Isaiah Collier and Bronny James. James is currently looking into the root cause of his cardiac arrest suffered last month, and his availability for the start of the season (and, well, all of the season) remains a bit up in the air, but should he be able to play, he had been considered a first round NBA draft prospect next summer. Collier, meanwhile, is generally regarded as a top-10 lottery pick.
