USC Football: Expert Calls Out Trojans' Biggest Defensive Liability Ahead Of Arizona Game

In this story:

With the USC Trojans getting set to take on the Arizona Wildcats, the biggest thing anyone will be looking for in this game is how the USC defense holds up. After two shaky performances back-to-back, the Trojans are under the microscope in this matchup.

USC has seen their strong start to the year on defense crumble in just a few weeks, and it seems they are back to square one. And this game against Arizona won't be a gimme either, as the Wildcats possess a formidable offensive attack.

However, one writer believes that the pass defense is the biggest concern for the Trojans, and that is something they need to be aware of in this matchup.

“The run defense isn’t far behind, but the Trojans’ biggest defensive concern at the moment has to be the pass defense. The cornerback group, in particular, will come under fire here soon. Arizona has talented wideouts in Tetairoa McMillan and Jacob Cowing and a good tight end with Tanner McLachlan.”

Per Antonio Morales of The Athletic

Arizona has surely watched game film on the Trojans defense, and they will likely attack them through the air often. It's possible they do it right out of the gates to test the Trojans secondary and show them that it could be a long night.

“Per TruMedia, USC has allowed gains of 20-plus yards on 11 percent of pass attempts this season. That ranks 88th nationally. It has allowed seven touchdown passes of 20-plus yards, fourth nationally, behind only Nevada, Colorado and UMass. The pass defense has to improve. Quickly. Because there are upcoming opponents who can throw waves of talented receivers at the unit and embarrass the defense.”

Per Antonio Morales of The Athletic

The Trojans may be able to get by a team like Arizona with a poor defensive effort, but their schedule gets very tough going forward. And against better competition, they will fall if the defense doesn't improve soon.

USC came into the season with dreams of going undefeated and winning a National Championship, but this could end up costing them. They have work to do, and unless they fix things soon, they can kiss their dreams goodbye for the year.
