Broughton, who entered the transfer portal shortly after the 2023 regular season ended in early December, will join the TCU Horned Frogs with one year of eligibility remaining.
Initially committing to Utah as a three-star prospect in 2019, Broughton played in 47 games (29 starts) as a Ute over the course of five seasons. He was a Pac-12 All-Conference honorable mention in 2020 after only starting five games, and after a season-ending injury in 2021, started at least ten games in both 2022 and 2023.
The 6 '1, 190-pound cornerback's departure was foreseeable after an earlier debacle surrounding his transfer caused some fans a significant headache.
Initial reports on Jan. 3rd noted that Broughton had withdrawn his name from the transfer portal and intended to return to Utah. However, in reality, Broughton changed his legal name and thus, due to an NCAA technicality, was forced to withdraw his original name from the portal.
Broughton’s transfer to TCU is a significant loss for Utah, who also saw starting corner Miles Battle declare for the 2024 NFL Draft. Moreover, Utah also lost depth at corner due to the transfers of Kenzel Lawler, Faybian Marks, and Jocelyn Malaska.
Despite multiple departures affecting positional depth at corner, Utah has done its part using the transfer portal and recruiting to fill in any potential holes.
First and foremost, the Utes added a trio of three-star cornerback prospects in their 2024 recruiting class: Sammie Hunter, LaTristan Thompson, and Quimari Shemwell. On top of that, the Utes also signed Michigan transfer Cameron Calhoun and Georgia Tech transfer Kenan Johnson as more immediate impact players at corner.
Circling back to Broughton, the former Ute will get to return to Rice-Eccles Stadium one final time, as TCU will face Utah in 2024 thanks to the new Big-12 schedule.
Although he will be wearing the opposing team's colors, Broughton will certainly be received well by the Utah faithful and his former teammates, who all hold him in high regard for the time he spent in Salt Lake City.
