Clark Lea Rips Vanderbilt Football Team In Tuesday Press Conference

Vanderbilt football coach Clark Lea ripped his team, its performance Saturday against Ole Miss, its response and its attitude coming out of the weekend.

In this story:

Clark Lea isn’t naive enough to believe that what he said would be entirely unconcerning, yet he said it anyway.

Perhaps he was shouting a wake up call to his team after its 52-17 loss to Ole Miss. Perhaps he was set on being entirely transparent and knew he had to tell the truth. Perhaps he was so fed up with saying the same things over and over again that he finally broke. In any case, Lea said something different than he’s

Lea came to the podium Tuesday, exchanged pleasantries with media members and quickly got to his messaging. He acknowledged that his program hasn’t lost like it did Saturday in a long time and that it’s not acceptable to do so. He declared that the season his program imagined has met reality in a cruel way. He acknowledged that the coming weeks are as significant for this Vanderbilt team as any.

Before he was done with his opening statement, Lea admitted something else.

“I’d be lying if I was up here saying that I feel like the team has responded all the way,” Lea said. “I think we were inconsistent today, I don’t think the energy level was where we needed to be and I don’t think the detail was where we needed it to be. Not that there weren’t flashes or positive moments, but we need to be a team that’s out to prove something–not to the world and not to Arkansas, but to ourselves.”

Lea knows his group is capable of that, but he still talks as if he’s yet to see this group prove much. He’d likely have a different tone if its issues were generally induced by freshman mistakes from Jared Curtis, but he knows they’re not. He knows that its self destruction and penalty issues have all but sunk this group the last three weeks.

He knows that it has to be significantly better Saturday against Arkansas if it’s going to leave FirstBank Stadium with a win. As a result, he’s not holding back on this group. Lea has a new rule that he’s instituted this week. For every yard of operational penalty, the Vanderbilt offense has up downs after practice.

Lea doesn’t know if it will happen, but he appears to know that he has to do anything in his power to make this Vanderbilt team more disciplined–on and off the field. As a result, he’s okay with ripping this group. He’s making sure that they know that their attitude at this stage is not acceptable.

“Right now, we’re playing as if we’re entitled to an outcome and we’re offended when it doesn’t go the way we want it to go,” Lea said. “That mentality and attitude is what I’m attacking right now internally. I say that in a way that’s meant to be reflective, not judgemental, because ultimately I’m responsible for it. I don’t see these things as independent of my imprint or my influence. I think this is a 24/7 self reflection that gives way to processing about where the team is and what my message needs to be.”

But, Lea gets blunt for a second in regard to that idea. This Vanderbilt team is beyond messaging at this point. This is about action and the level of accountability within the program in regard to the action that Lea and company are demanding.

That action hasn’t been good enough for Lea. He wanted to win big this season rather than making it a foundational year, yet Vanderbilt is 3-3 and hasn’t played anywhere near a complete game at this point. Lea declares that the story of this Vanderbilt team is inconsistency. It’s flashed, but it’s been far from a winning team in a number of ways.

Vanderbilt’s penalty issues and turnovers accounted for what Lea estimated was a 32-point swing in its loss to Ole Miss. Two of those were unnecessary roughness penalties. As a result, Ole Miss backup quarterback Deuce Knight was in the game for the entirety of Saturday’s fourth quarter and Vanderbilt lost by its biggest margin since before Diego Pavia’s 2024 arrival in the program.

It got its a** kicked, as Lea said Saturday night. He doesn’t appear to have changed his feelings on that matter. He knows it will continue to if his message doesn’t get across. He’s not saying all this for nothing.

“I want to see this team play better football,” Lea said. “In that sense, there’s nothing bigger.”
