Wisconsin vs. Ohio State: A Season-High in Arrests and Ejections

Halloween may have brought more tricks than treats for fans at Camp Randall Stadium. The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department (UWPD) has released its arrest and citation report after the Wisconsin Badgers suffered a 10-24 loss to Ohio State this past Saturday. Held at the near-capacity Camp Randall Stadium, the Halloween game recorded the highest number of ejections and arrests this season.

60 people were ejected during the Wisconsin vs. Ohio State game and 28 of them were UW-Madison students. UWPD also issued 25 citations, with 21 of them given to UW-Madison students. A closer look at the citations shows that 22 were related to underage drinking. The rest included offenses such as trespassing, possession of alcohol, and false identification. Of those removed, 24 were arrested, and 20 were UW-Madison students. Paramedics were dispatched nine times during the game, plus there were 15 first aid calls. Four people had a blood alcohol content level of .20 or higher, well beyond the legal limit.

Ensuring Public Safety: A Collaborative Effort

"We make sure to plan in advance before game days in order to ensure public safety during large-scale events like this,” said UWPD spokesperson Marc Lovicott. “We’ve been doing game day for years now.” Lovicott further explained that the department also works with the Madison Police Department and the Dane County Sheriff's Department. This was a significant increase in ejections compared to their Homecoming game against Rutgers when they had 42 ejections.

Coming Up

Wisconsin travels to Indiana this weekend for a match against the Hoosiers on November 4. The Badgers will be back at Camp Randall Stadium on November 11 to take on Northwestern. Hopefully, we won't see a repeat of off-field incidents.
