Oregon State vs. Oregon Game Prediction, How to Watch

How and what to watch as Oregon State takes on Oregon in the 2023 Civil War game as the 2023 college football regular season wraps up
  • Author:
  • Publish date:

While the Ducks have taken 12 of the last 15 in the Civil War series, two of the last three have gone in the Beavers' favor, including last season's result. But coming into this year's edition of the rivalry, No. 6 Oregon is playing for more as it hosts No. 16 Oregon State in the last meeting between these schools as Pac-12 members.

  • With a win, Oregon will clinch a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game against Washington in a rematch of the Ducks' only loss this season
  • And a win in Vegas would likely propel Oregon back into the College Football Playoff as well, but another loss in either game would ruin those plans
  • Oregon is No. 1 in total offense and 2nd nationally in passing and scoring
  • Oregon State can play chaos agent with an upset that would not only ruin the Ducks' title hopes, but could also put Arizona into the Pac-12 title bout

What to watch for

1. Pressure Bo. Oregon State presents a credible challenge to the Ducks' blockers and their effort to protect quarterback Bo Nix. The Beavers come into the game ranked 5th nationally in total sacks recorded. And while sacks don't tell the whole story, they do reveal how well a defense can generate pressure broadly. The problem for OSU? Oregon ranks No. 1 in college football with 0.5 sacks allowed per game and 5 surrendered in total this season.

2. Battle at the line. That expert play on the line has been the engine behind Oregon's superb rushing offense. The Ducks rank first in the Pac-12 with 5.98 rushing yards per attempt on average and are 2nd in the conference with 196.6 rushing yards per game. OSU is 19th in rush defense and has improved recently, allowing just 66.7 yards on the ground on average and only 2.4 ypc in the last three games.

3. Beavers on the ground. While the play of quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has been up and down, the Clemson transfer has been relatively efficient on his deeper pass play. That forces defense to spread out more and open up running lanes for Damien Martinez, the Beaver back who is 2nd in the Pac-12 with 104.3 rushing yards per game and has eclipsed 100 yards on the ground in six games total. Oregon is 18th nationally allowing 3.3 ypc, but that figure has swelled to 4.1 the last three times out.

Oregon vs. Oregon State prediction

Rivalry games bring out a whole different effort in both teams, and Martinez should find some holes early enough to put the Beavers in scoring position and possibly even give them an early lead.

But the Ducks have more skill weapons to throw at OSU's second-level tacklers and playing with home-field advantage and so much on the line should bring out their best effort to date.
