Quarterback is still the most important position on the field, and transfers are very highly recruited right now, with almost half of all college football teams at the FBS level starting a transfer quarterback last season.

Michigan State Spartans college football team schedule, rankings

Payton Thorne

Where he was: Michigan State

Need to know: A late entry into the transfer portal and one of two major offensive pieces the Spartans are losing this offseason, Thorne shouldn't have much trouble finding a suitor for the 2023 season given his experience at the Power Five level. Thorne threw for 6,949 total yards and scored 49 touchdowns with his right arm while throwing 24 interceptions in 29 appearances for Michigan State. That's alongside a 61 percent completion rate, all numbers that many schools are looking for.

Casey Thompson

Where he was: Nebraska

Need to know: The emergence of transfer Jeff Sims and his own injury preventing him from taking part in spring football have inspired the former Cornhuskers starter to look elsewhere. Thompson spent the first four seasons of his college football career at Texas, and he put together a solid 2021 campaign in which he went over 2,100 yards passing with 24 touchdowns. He started 10 games for Nebraska last season, throwing for over 2,400 yards with 17 scores.

TJ Finley

Where he was: Auburn

Need to know: A two-time transfer already, Finley has logged starting snaps with both LSU and Auburn, making five starts with the former during the 2020 season and then earned the starting role with the latter the next two seasons. Over a 13 game sample at Auburn, the quarterback had 1,258 passing yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions, and he was limited by injuries a year ago. But in the right system, Finley can emerge as a legitimate dual-threat option.

Ben Bryant

Where he was: Cincinnati

Need to know: The starter for Cincinnati last season, Bryant had 2,732 total passing yards with 21 touchdowns, but comes into summer football looking at a competition for the No. 1 job alongside Emory Jones as first-year coach Scott Satterfield looks to implement his offense. Bryant has played in 40 total games, a ton of experience for a team in the market for a quarterback.
