Being able to win consistently in your own place and defend the home field is a crucial measure of success in college football and the first step towards building a quality schedule resume in the eyes of the playoff selection committee, and last season saw the demise of some major home win streaks.

The record-holder in this category until late last season was Clemson, which won 40 straight games at home before a late loss to unranked rival South Carolina. Cincinnati placed second on the list until its 32-game home win streak was snapped after a three-point loss to eventual AAC champion Tulane.

USC and Washington enter this coming fall with seven straight wins at home each, and College Football Playoff semifinalist TCU has won eight in a row. What other teams have the longest active home win streaks coming into the 2023 season?

5. Tennessee

Home win streak: 9 games

Tennessee was unstoppable on Rocky Top a year ago as Josh Heupel's squad fielded college football's No. 1 ranked total offense, fending off rivals Florida and Kentucky and the most important of all, a 3-point dub against Alabama that had fans breaking a noise record and storming the field. This year, Georgia comes to Knoxville in a major tilt that will affect the SEC East title race.

4. Utah

Home win streak: 14 games

Utah has defended its home turf well in recent memory, including a statement victory over a ranked and undefeated USC team a year ago in a tightly-contested, 1-point victory for the Utes, who went on to win the Pac-12 title. This year, Utah, which last lost at home to USC during the Covid season, welcomes Florida in the 2023 opener in addition to UCLA and Oregon.

3. Michigan

Home win streak: 15 games

Michigan hasn't taken an L at the Big House since playing Penn State during the 2020 season and the team's dominance at home has been crucial to its success over the last two years, in particular, as the Wolverines won two straight Big Ten titles and made the College Football Playoff in consecutive seasons.

2. Georgia

Home win streak: 18 games

Georgia fans remember well when the Bulldogs' last home loss was: Nov. 12, 2019, when Rodrigo Blankenship's field goal sailed wide left against South Carolina. Since then, Georgia has been unstoppable wherever it plays, going 29-1 and winning two straight national championships, with the only loss coming to Alabama in the '21 SEC title game. UGA comes into 2023 with a favorable schedule and a real shot at going undefeated again.

1. Alabama

Home win streak: 20 games

There are few safer bets in college football than Alabama winning at home, against any team, ranked or not. The last time the Crimson Tide walked off their own field a loser was Nov. 9, 2019, against an opponent that no one could stop: Joe Burrow and LSU used this game to boost their undefeated record en route to scores of broken records, a Heisman Trophy, and the national championship, in a close-fought 46-41 duel.
