The New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night by a score of 4-3 as Pete Alonso hit his 35th home run of the season.

With that blast, Alonso joined an exclusive group in baseball history.

Per ESPN Stats & Info:

Last night, Pete Alonso joined Albert Pujols, Eddie Mathews and Ralph Kiner as the only players in MLB history with at least 35 HR in 4 of their first 5 career seasons.

The only season Alonso didn't reach 35 HR was the shortened 2020 season, when he hit 16.

Kiner and Mathews are Hall of Famers, and Pujols will be a Hall of Famer, so that's an incredible group for Alonso to be a part of. Since becoming a major league regular in 2019, Alonso has been a consistent force in the middle of the Mets lineup.

He's got 181 career homers in his career. He led the league in homers in his rookie year with 53 and led the league in RBI with 131 in 2022. He's won a Rookie of the Year award and has been named a three-time All-Star.

He's a lifetime .255 hitter who is hitting .227 this season.

After selling at the trade deadline, the Mets are certainly playing for next year, but Alonso is a reason to keep watching this year.

The team is 52-62 and 7.0 games back in the National League wild card race.

The Mets are off on Thursday but will host the division-rival Atlanta Braves on Friday night. First pitch is 7:10 p.m. ET.
