The New York Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4 on Tuesday night to deal a blow to Arizona's playoff hopes.

The loss dropped the Diamondbacks to 76-70 on the season and shrunk their lead for the third and final wild card spot in the National League to just 1.0 game over the Cincinnati Reds.

The win moved the Mets to 66-78 on the year. The dreadful and disappointing season has them at 9.0 games back.

As has been the case so many times this year, the Mets' offense was fueled by slugger Pete Alonso. The burly first baseman went 2-for-5 and hit his 44th home run of the season.

With that home run, he now has 190 in his career, which moves him up an incredible all-time list in baseball history.

Per @StatsCentre:

Continuing to excel at producing runs despite his team's struggles in 2023, #Mets slugger Pete Alonso earned his 44th home run of 2023 in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the D'backs. It's the 190th of his career, tying behind just 2 on this list of players within their first 5 MLB seasons

Alonso moved into a tie for third with Eddie Mathews. They just trail Albert Pujols (201) and Ralph Kiner (215).

Alonso has struggled with his average this year, hitting just .224, but he's got the 44 home runs and 105 RBI. He's put up those numbers despite going on the injured list earlier this season.

The Mets and Diamondbacks will play again on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
