The San Diego Padres are hosting the Chicago Cubs on Monday night at PetCo park and once again, they'll play without star shortstop Xander Bogaerts.

Bogaerts, who was signed to an 11-year, $280 million deal this offseason, has been battling a wrist issue since spring training.

Jeff Saunders of the San Diego-Union Tribune provided an update on Monday afternoon:

Bogaerts hoping for tomorrow.

He says surgery is not something that’s needed even as a long-term fix.

The cortisone shot knocked out what he was dealing with in spring training. Then he got hit by a pitch by Spencer Strider and it’s too soon to get another.

It's certainly good to hear that Bogaerts doesn't need surgery, but it's also disheartening to hear that he's likely going to be bothered by this issue all season.

The issue certainly made things worse for Bogaerts in May. He hit .200 and played in just 25 games. He hit .308 prior to May.

For the season overall, he's hitting .252 with seven homers, 21 RBI and six stolen bases.

Bogaerts spent a decade with the Boston Red Sox prior to signing in San Diego. He helped the Red Sox win both the 2013 and 2018 World Series. Lifetime, he's a .290 hitter with 163 homers.

Overall, he's a four-time All-Star selection and a five-time Silver Slugger winner.

The Padres enter play on Monday at 27-32 and in fourth place in the National League West. They trail the first place Dodgers and Diamondbacks each by 7.5 games.
