Earlier this week, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that the team was not opposed to bringing injured infielder Trevor Story back to the lineup before he was ready to play defense.

In that case, Story would be used as a designated hitter, similar to what the Philadelphia Phillies are doing with Bryce Harper.

That would seem like a good idea to help the Red Sox offense, but also creates problems defensively. You can read about that here.

Speaking on Wednesday on 'The Brady Farkas Show' on WDEV Radio, Red Sox Insider Tom Caron of NESN pushed back on the idea saying this:

"They will not bring Story back, sooner as a DH, frankly if everybody's healthy. If Duvall and Turner and Casas and Duran are all here, Story's going to have spend extra time in the minors until he's ready to come back as a shortstop...."

He hit .238 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs last year for the Red Sox. He played in just 94 games a season ago with unrelated injuries.

The 30-year-old is a two-time All-Star who has received MVP votes in three different seasons. He's a lifetime .268 hitter with 174 home runs. He had played with the Colorado Rockies before signing in Boston.

The Red Sox enter play on Thursday at 31-31. They'll take on the Cleveland Guardians at 7:10 p.m. ET.

The Sox will be starting controversial pitcher Matt Dermody, who will be making his first appearance in a Red Sox uniform after 30 prior appearances with the Blue Jays and Cubs.
