Here's the Latest on Chicago White Sox Third Baseman Yoan Moncada's Scary Injury

Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada went down with an adductor injury on his way to first base on Tuesday, and he needed to be helped off the field.

Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada suffered a scary injury during Tuesday afternoon's game against the Cleveland Guardians.

The 28-year-old, who already had a single and a run on the day, stepped up to the plate with one down in the top of the second inning. He pulled a ground ball to third baseman Jose Ramirez and made a break for it down the first base line.

Moncada pulled up short, though, hobbling and falling before he even got to first.

Moncada needed help getting off the field.

The White Sox later announced that Moncada had suffered a left adductor strain. He will be reevaluated Wednesday.

Manager Pedro Grifol told reporters that Moncada had been dealing with a nagging hip and adductor issue in the three-to-four days leading up to Tuesday's game. He didn't take any games off, however, and Tuesday marked the first time he didn't play a complete game this year.

Moncada is batting .282 with a .774 OPS in 11 games this season, which is one of the few bright spots in an otherwise lackluster White Sox lineup.

Ever since his breakout season in 2019, Moncada's production has dropped off. After batting .315 with 25 home runs, 79 RBI, a .915 OPS and a 5.2 WAR that year, Moncada averaged 11 home runs, 44 RBI, a .243 batting average, a .720 OPS and a 1.5 WAR from 2020 to 2023.

A back injury limited Moncada to 92 games in 2023. Oblique, quad, hamstring and foot injuries led to him appearing in just 104 games in 2022, as well.

The former top prospect is in the final season of a five-year, $70 million extension he inked back in 2020. The White Sox have a $25 million club option on Moncada's deal, as well as a $5 million buyout.

Chicago, sitting dead last in the AL Central at 2-9, has 24-year-old Lenyn Sosa as its backup third baseman. He subbed in for Moncada on Tuesday, going 1-for-5 with an RBI double in the White Sox's eventual 7-5 win.
