Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout has undergone surgery to repair his fractured hamate bone, just days after not being sure if he'd need the procedure.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Trout underwent surgery Wednesday to remove his fractured left hamate bone, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

ANALYSIS
The operation went as expected. While no timetable for Trout's return has been established, it's a surgery which typically results in anywhere between a four- to eight-week absence. Mickey Moniak has started each of the first two games in center field for the Angels since Trout was hurt, but Jo Adell could also see action there, particularly against lefties.

The injury is devastating for both Trout and the Angels. The Halos are fighting to make the playoffs for the first time since 2014 and enter play on Wednesday at seven games back in the American League West and four games back in the AL wild card chase. They can ill-afford to lose one of the best players in the sport as they chase the playoffs - and as they try to do enough to convince Shohei Ohtani to stay this offseason.

Trout is hitting .263 this season with 18 homers and 44 RBI.

One of the best players in the history of the sport, he's a three-time MVP and a nine-time Silver Slugger winner.

He was also named to his 11th All-Star Game this year, but won't be playing.

The Angels take on the Padres on Wednesday at 8:40 p.m. ET.
