Left-Handed Reliever Who Pitched a Decade in the Big Leagues Announces Retirement
Former left-handed reliever Luis Avilan, who spent a decade in the big leagues, has announced his retirement at the age of 34.
The report came from Jon Heyman of the New York Post on social media:
Luis Avilan, who pitched 10 years in the big leagues and is 23-11 lifetime with a 3.43 ERA, has retired. Pitched for both the Yankees and Mets.
The native of Venezuela last pitched in 2021 and then underwent Tommy John surgery.

Avilan, 34, last saw action in the big leagues in 2021 with the Nationals before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He had a nice career as a left-handed reliever, posting a 3.43 ERA over parts of 10 major-league seasons.
In addition to the Mets and Yankees, he played for the Braves, Dodgers, White Sox, Phillies and Nationals.
He came up with the Braves, pitching from 2012-15 in Atlanta. Then, he spent part 2015-2017 with the Dodgers before going to Philadelphia and Chicago in 2018. He spent 2019 with the Mets, 2020 with the Yankees and 2021 with the Nationals before getting hurt.
He was a reliable and always available arm, having made more than 70 appearances in three separate seasons, tossing in 70 games in 2018, 75 in 2013 and 73 in 2015.
He recorded five wins and pitched to a 1.52 ERA in 2013 with the Braves. Avilan recorded two lifetime saves as well, both coming in 2018 with the White Sox.
He made 458 career appearances and finished 57 games as well. We wish him the best as he transitions into the next phase of his life.
