Even if Kluber wants to pitch, it remains to be seen how much interest there will be in him. The soon-to-be 38-year-old is coming off a dreadful year with the Boston Red Sox that saw him go 3-6 with a 7.04 ERA. He was demoted to the bullpen and then didn't appear in a game after June 20th because of injury.
The Sox' Opening Day starter in 2023, he made 15 appearances (nine starts) and struck out just 42 batters in 55.0 innings.
Despite the bad year, he's one of the most accomplished pitchers in baseball over the last decade-plus. He's pitched in 13 seasons in the big leagues for the Guardians, Rays, Red Sox, Yankees and Rangers, going 116-77. He's got a career 3.44 ERA, is a three-time All-Star and a two-time Cy Young Award winner.
He's led the league in wins twice (2014, 20017), ERA once (2017) and complete games three times. He also led the league in innings pitched (2015) and shutouts three times.
He helped the Cleveland franchise get to the World Series in the 2016 season, when they were beaten by the Chicago Cubs.
As for the Red Sox and what they'll do in the absence of Kluber? They currently have Chris Sale and Brayan Bello locked into rotation spots. They have Nick Pivetta, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford and Garrett Whitlock as rotation options but will likely be active on the free agent market as well.
