Former National League West Slugger Heads to Japan to Continue Career

Alex Dickerson, a former starting outfielder for the San Francisco Giants, is headed to Japan at the age of 33.

Former big league outfielder Alex Dickerson is headed to Japan as he looks to continue his baseball career.

Per Jon Heyman of the New York Post:

Alex Dickerson, former Giants and Padres OF, signs with the Chunichi Dragons

The 33-year-old outfielder has played parts of six seasons in the big leagues but has been around the big leagues for nine years.

He made his major league debut in 2015 with the San Diego Padres and then missed all of the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He also didn't get to the majors in 2023. He represented Team Israel at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

In addition to the Padres, he's played for the Giants and Braves. He played in 52 of a possible 60 games in the COVID 2020 season and then played 111 games in 2021. Lifetime, he's a .255 hitter at the major league level. He owns a .325 on-base percentage and has 40 career home runs.

He hit 10 home runs during that COVID-shortened season. His career-high of 13 home runs came in the subsequent 2021 season. He hit .298 during the COVID season.

Heading to Japan is a good move for Dickerson, as he assuredly will get himself more money in the NPB. He also will have a better chance at a more consistent role. If he plays well in 2024, he'll have a possible chance to return to the States in 2025.

Just recently, we've seen multiple pitchers like Chris Flexen and Erik Fedde return home for playing in Korea, so perhaps Dickerson can do it from the position player side.
