Moments after recording the final out in Team Puerto Rico's stunning 5-2 victory over the Dominican Republic to advance to the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals, Edwin Diaz sustained an apparent leg injury, which appeared to have occurred sometime while he was celebrating the historic victory for Puerto Rico.

Teammates attempted to carry Diaz off the field, before he was carted off by Puerto Rico's medical staff.

Diaz's brother, Alexis, was moved to tears as he watched his brother carted off the field. Alexis, a member of the Cincinnati Reds, recorded 10 saves, while posting a 1.84 ERA over 63.2 innings pitched in his rookie season in 2022.

Edwin was named the Major League Baseball Reliever of the Year in 2022, after receiving his second All-Star nomination, posting a 1.31 ERA and collecting 32 saves over 62 innings pitched and 61 appearances.

Edwin received a five-year, $102 million contract extension after his remarkable 2022 season.

A knee injury could sideline Edwin for a significant amount of time. Edwin's exit comes just a day after Freddie Freeman sustained a hamstring strain in Team Canada's World Baseball Classic game on Tuesday.

Losing Diaz for any amount of time would be a significant blow to the Mets' bullpen. The Mets won 101 games in 2022, tying for the best record in the National League West with the Atlanta Braves. However, the Braves owned the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mets, winning the division for the fifth straight year. The Mets received a National League Wild Card spot, clinching a postseason berth for the first time since 2016.
