8:23 p.m. ET UPDATE: USA Today's Bob Nightengale is reporting that Nimmo left the game with right ankle soreness, and that Nimmo will undergo imaging Saturday.

Just days after losing closer Edwin Diaz for the season, after the reliever sustained a knee injury celebrating Puerto Rico's win over the Dominican Republic Wednesday night, clinching a trip to the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals, another New York Mets player appears to have sustained an injury.

Mets center fielder Brandon Nimmo limped off the field of Friday evening's spring training game against the Miami Marlins, following an awkward slide into second base.

It appears that Nimmo may have sustained an injury to his right ankle.

After testing the free agent market, Brandon Nimmo signed an eight-year, $162 million contract to return to the Mets. Nimmo, however has had injury and durability concerns, through his seven-year Major League career. Nimmo has played 150 or more games in a season just once in his seven-year Major League career. Nimmo played 151 games in 2022 and 140 games in 2018. The next-highest total of games he has played in a season? 92, a mark he reached in 2021.

Losing Nimmo for any amount of time would be a significant blow to the Mets. In 151 games in 2022, Nimmo slashed .274/.367/.800 with 16 home runs and 64 RBI.

If the Mets are without Nimmo for a significant amount of time, newly-acquired Tommy Pham could see regular playing time in the outfield, alongside starters Starling Marte and Mark Canha.
