Milwaukee Brewers Acquire Veteran Slugger in Deal with Pittsburgh Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired switch-hitting veteran Carlos Santana from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Milwaukee Brewers, leading the National League Central by 1.5 games entering play on Thursday, have bolstered their lineup by acquiring veteran slugger Carlos Santana in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Sources: Pirates have traded Carlos Santana to the Brewers for SS prospect Jhonny Severino. Was 1 of 2 big international signings for MIL in ’22. Story to come.

The 37-year-old Santana is hitting .235 this season with 12 home runs and 53 RBI. He's also got a .321 on-base percentage and six stolen bases.

The switch-hitter is in his 14th year in the big leagues with the Guardians, Royals, Mariners, Phillies and Pirates. He's a lifetime .242 hitter who has connected for 290 home runs.

Also known as a great clubhouse guy, he was a huge difference maker for the 2022 Mariners as they ended their 20-year playoff drought. He should be able to come in and connect with the Brewers as well.

He's made one All-Star team and won a Silver Slugger award in his career.

The Brewers are currently 57-46 and have won six of 10, while the Pirates are 45-57.

Per a story from Mackey on the deal:

Future-wise, at least Severino is an interesting prospect, an Endy Rodriguez-type the Pirates feel could really thrive with coaching and experience.

Signing via international free agency, Severino appeared in 48 games in the Dominican Summer League last season, hitting .268 with a .724 OPS and 10 stolen bases. He has gotten off to a hot start this summer since coming to the United States and competing in the Arizona Complex League.
