New York Mets on Verge of Adding Now-Former New York Yankees' Flamethrower

The New York Mets are reportedly on the verge of signing free agent pitcher Luis Severino.

As the New York Mets attempt to rebuild their roster in 2024, they are giving a former All-Star a chance to rebuild his career.

Per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com:

Luis Severino is nearing a deal with the Mets, per source.

Severino was once thought of as a core piece of the Yankees roster, but finds himself in free agency after a dreadful 2023 season - and a tough last several seasons.

He made the All-Star team in the American League in both the 2017 and 2018 seasons and looked like one of the best pitchers in the AL, but then, the injuries struck.

He made just three appearances in the 2019 season and then missed the entirety of the COVID 2020 season. He made just four appearances in 2021 before coming back for 19 strong appearances in 2022.

Unfortunately, he started 2023 on the injured list for the Yankees and then never got going. He went just 4-8 with a 6.65 ERA, striking out 79 batters in 89.1 innings.

At the time of this posting, financial details are not out on the deal, but it figures to be a one-year "prove it deal."

Lifetime, Severino is 54-37 with a 3.79 ERA. Still just 29 years old, he has a chance to help a Mets team that finished fourth in the National League East last year - and traded away Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander.

The Mets have a new manager in Carlos Mendoza and will look to have Severino help anchor the rotation in Queens.
