New York Mets superstar Pete Alonso is headed for free agency after the 2024 season and Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns says he doesn't expect the two sides to come to an agreement before then.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns indicated in an interview with Foul Territory on Wednesday that he does not expect to sign Alonso to a contract extension prior to the first baseman reaching free agency next offseason.

ANALYSIS
Stearns did say that he's hopeful the two sides will eventually be able to work something out, but it doesn't sound like either party anticipates that happening before the end of the season. Alonso, for what it's worth, hired Scott Boras as his agent earlier this offseason. The 29-year-old slugger will make $20.5 million in 2024 before hitting the open market next winter.

Given his age, and by hiring Boras, it's clear that Alonso will be looking to cash in. He very well could want - and receive - a contract worth more than $250 million. Of course, the Mets and owner Steve Cohen can afford any contract, so we'll see how far they are willing to do to keep Alonso around.

One of the best sluggers in the sport, Alonso hit 46 homers last year in 568 at-bats. Unfortunately, he only hit .217 though. His batting average has fluctuated over his career, but his power has always been there. He led baseball in homers with 53 in 2019 and led the league in RBIs with 131 in 2022.

He's already a three-time All-Star, a two-time Home Run Derby champion and a Rookie of the Year winner.
