Justin Turner is drawing serious interest on the free agent market from the New York Mets, according to a report from Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Per Puma:

Justin Turner would give the Mets a proven bat and versatility to play third base, if needed.

The Mets, according to a source, have been engaged in discussions with Turner’s camp after initiating contact with the former All-Star early in the offseason.

While Turner isn't much of a defensive player anymore at this point in his career, he could play some third base to help shoulder the loss of top prospect Ronny Mauricio, who tore his ACL in winter ball.

He'd more likely serve as a designated hitter, where he largely excelled last season with the Boston Red Sox.

The 39-year-old hit .276 across 558 at-bats for Boston, clocking 23 homers and bringing in 96. He was the centerpiece of a lineup for the Red Sox that didn't feature much power outside of Rafael Devers. Despite not having much protection, he was one of the best run producers in the American League.

If Turner were to sign in New York, it would represent a reunion for the two sides. After debuting with the Baltimore Orioles in 2009, Turner got to New York in 2010 and played for the Mets through 2013.

After that, he went onto a storied career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, helping LA win a World Series in 2020.

Lifetime, Turner is a two-time All-Star and a .288 hitter. He has 187 career homers.

In addition to the Mets, the Arizona Diamondbacks have reportedly been interested in signing Turner.
