The New York Mets have signed catcher Gary Sánchez to a minor league contract.

He had signed a minor league deal at the end of March with the San Francisco Giants but exercised an opt-out to hit the free agent market once again.

He struggled offensively in the Giants system, hitting just .164 at Triple-A. He opted out because he was not in the majors by May 1st.

Sánchez, 30, spent last season in Minnesota, hitting .205 in 128 games with the Twins. Before his stint in Minnesota, he spent parts of seven seasons with the Yankees, earning All-Star nods in 2017 and 2019. He also recently played for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball classic.

Despite his run of success in New York, Sánchez fell out of favor with Yankees fans who grew tired of seeing his low batting averages and high strikeout totals. He hit .186, .232, .147 and .204 in his last four years with the Yankees. He was traded to the Twins before the 2022 season as part of the deal that sent Josh Donaldson to New York.

The above article indicates that Sánchez also had interest from the Los Angeles Angels after exercising the opt-out with the Giants.

With the Mets, Sánchez is a depth option behind top prospect Francisco Alvarez and Tomas Nido.

The Mets are currently 17-18 and in second place in the competitive National League East. They trail the first-place Braves (24-11) by seven games.

The Mets will take on the Cincinnati Reds tonight at 6:40 p.m. ET.
