Phillies Slugger, Braves Ace Go Viral For Unique All-Star Game Interviews
Two of the most baffling interviews to come out of MLB All-Star week made waves in two very different ways.
While being interviewed by a 7-year-old reporter, Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider took some time to detail the mechanics behind his pitching motion. In doing so, Strider used the phrase "supinated release," according to Cespedes Family BBQ on Twitter.
The supinator is a muscle in the forearm that is associated with deceleration of the elbow during extension. Sunipate, meanwhile, is to turn or hold a hand so the palm is facing upwards or outwards.
Suffice to say, the kid reporter likely wasn't the only one who couldn't fully understand Strider's specific terminology.
Strider was named an All-Star this season – his first as a full-time starter. Through 18 starts, the 24-year-old is 11-2 with a 3.44 ERA and a National League-best 166 strikeouts.
A few minutes after Strider started to go viral for his overly technical response, Philadelphia Phillies right fielder Nick Castellanos – who is no stranger to the internet spotlight – took a different approach at the podium.
KTVZ NewsChannel 21 Sports Anchor Noah Chast asked a follow up question on an opinion Castellanos had previously shared, which was that Scooby-Doo was his favorite superhero. When pressed on his labeling of the 54-year-old cartoon dog as a superhero, Castellanos stood his ground without cracking a smile.
"First off, he's a dog, and he can talk ... and he solves mysteries," Castellanos said. "So I think that a dog that can talk and helps people by solving mysteries, I think is a superhero."
The 31-year-old Castellanos made his second career All-Star Game this year, earning the spot after hitting 13 home runs and 55 RBI with a 301 batting average and .840 OPS through 87 games.
Neither Castellanos nor Strider are starting for the National League in Tuesday's All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park, which is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. on FOX.
