San Diego Padres Owner Peter Seidler: "We're Here to Win a Title"

In this story:
San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler recently spoke with the media, reaffirming his commitment to winning.
Since the club's inaugural season in 1969, the Padres have had the image of a small market team. But in recent years, Seidler, and the Padres front office, led by A.J. Preller, have ponied up big money, assembling an extremely talented roster. Since 2018, the Padres have acquired Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Eric Hosmer, Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell, Mike Clevinger and Juan Soto. The Padres have parted ways with a number of top prospects via trade, and spent big on a number of free agents. The club even gave Fernando Tatis Jr. a 14-year, $340 million extension, months after he took home National League Rookie of the Year honors.
The Padres enter 2023 with the third-highest projected payroll in baseball, trailing only the New York Mets and New York Yankees.
Seidler was recently asked about the opinions of others, in regards to how he has run the Padres as a business.
"I don't spend too much time, if any, thinking about what other people are thinking," Seidler said. "Truly, I care what we're thinking in this room and what we're planning for in this room, in this building, and of course, back in San Diego. And to me, it just feels great."
Seidler went on to explain that he has lofty goals and expectations for the Padres.
"We believe we have a great chance to go after that trophy and to deliver to San Diego its first parade," Seidler said. "And with a great deal of seriousness and humility, but the overall theme is we're here to win a title. That's what I expect."
The Padres won 89 games in 2022, and made their first National League Championship Series appearance since 1998. The Padres had not won an NLDS in 24 years. The Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in four games in the NLDS, but fell to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS.
After adding Xander Bogaerts and Michael Wacha, the Padres hope to take the next step in 2023, and win their first World Series in franchise history.
