The San Diego Padres added infield depth Tuesday, agreeing to terms on a minor league contract with 2015 All-Star shortstop Jose Iglesias, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reports.

Iglesias is yet the latest former All-Star to report to San Diego's Triple-A team, the El Paso Chihuahuas. Two-time All-Star Julio Teheran has made four starts in Triple-A this season. 2008 World Series champion and four-time All-Star Cole Hamels is expected to report to Triple-A El Paso when he is ready. Last season, eight-time All-Star Robinson Cano played 21 games for the Chihuahuas.

The Padres will take another flier on an accomplished Major League player. Iglesias has played 11 Major League seasons for the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels and Colorado Rockies. Last season, with the Rockies, Iglesias batted .292 with a .328 On Base Percentage and .708 OPS in 118 games.

Iglesias signed a minor league deal with the Miami Marlins on March 9. Less than three weeks later, Iglesias was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville. Last week, Iglesias exercised his opt out clause, making him a free agent.

Iglesias can provide depth to the Padres' middle infield. By signing Iglesias, the Padres also keep the Los Angeles Dodgers from boosting the depth of their middle infield. The Dodgers lost shortstop Gavin Lux to a knee injury at spring training. Miguel Rojas is currently on the Injured List. In the absence of both players, Mookie Betts has seen time at the position. Iglesias may have been a quality option for the Dodgers, but he is no longer available.
