Toronto Blue Jays Likely Out on Biggest Remaining Free Agent Bat

The Toronto Blue Jays brought back outfielder Kevin Kiermaier on Tuesday, meaning that they are likely not going to pursue free agent outfielder Cody Bellinger any further.

Last week, we heard that the Toronto Blue Jays were the "favorite" for free agent slugger Cody Bellinger.

That notion took a huge hit on Tuesday when the team elected to bring back Gold Glove outfielder Kevin Kiermaier, who signed a one-year deal worth $10.5 million.

While nothing can be ruled out, the Jays are seemingly out on Bellinger now, as noted by team reporter Ben Nicholson-Smith on social media:

By agreeing to terms with Kevin Kiermaier on a 1-yr deal, the #BlueJays have an outfield of Kiermaier, George Springer & Daulton Varsho in place for 2024.

The Cody Bellinger possibility now looks like an awkward fit at best for Jays, as OF looks like less of a priority for them.

Of course, there's still the designated hitter spot available and you could rotate guys in through that spot, but Nicholson-Smith's point is well taken: Toronto doesn't NEED an outfielder anymore, especially one who will cost more than $200 million, which is what Bellinger wants.

If the Blue Jays truly do turn away from a pursuit of Bellinger, they likely will start to pivot towards thinking about third base. Matt Chapman is currently a free agent and the team needs to replace his production. Perhaps they could bring him back, or they could look at trade candidates or other under-the-radar free agents. After third base, Toronto has a question at its No. 5 starter spot.

Are they going to give that spot to Alek Manoah out of spring training? Is top prospect Ricky Tiedemann ready? Do they want to bring someone else in?

The Jays still have questions this offseason, but some of those became a little clearer after bringing back Kiermaier.
