Toronto Blue Jays Provide Injury Update on Young IF, Discuss Playing Time For Veteran OFs

The Toronto Blue Jays reportedly will give George Springer and Kevin Kiermaier Grapefruit League action later this week after holding them out thus far. Furthermore, Cavan Biggio's injured shoulder is said to be progressing nicely.

The Toronto Blue Jays provided updates on Wednesday regarding George Springer, Kevin Kiermaier and Cavan Biggio.

Per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com:

Cavan Biggio (shoulder) is hitting regularly off a machine and progressing well. That one still doesn’t sound too worrying, but we should have a clearer timeline in a few days.

George Springer and Kevin Kiermaier (veteran horses being kept in stable) will play tomorrow #BlueJays

For Biggio, it's good that he's progressing but every day missed is a day in which he falls further back in the race for the second base or third base job. Currently, he's in a battle with Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Davis Schneider and Santiago Espinal for a roster spot and playing time.

The 28-year-old Biggio is a former top prospect who has struggled to put it together at the major league level. Lifetime, he's a .229 hitter with 46 homers. He had nine homers in 289 at-bats last season.

As for Springer, he was just named the team's leadoff hitter for 2024 and will continue to fill a huge role for the organization.

The 34-year-old Connecticut native is a 10-year veteran with the Houston Astros and Blue Jays. He is a four-time All-Star who helped the Astros win the World Series in 2017. He's also helped the Jays get to the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, though they have failed to win a single playoff game in that time.

Lifetime, Springer is a .267 hitter. In 2023, he hit .258 while pumping out 21 home runs and driving in 72 runs. He also stole 20 bases.

Kiermaier signed a one-year, $10.5 million deal to remain in Toronto this offseason.

The 33-year-old Indiana native hit .265 for Toronto in 2023, helping lead the Blue Jays to a third-place finish in the American League East.

He posted eight home runs, 36 RBI and 14 stolen bases.

He played 129 games which contributed to his lower offensive numbers, but he still played superb defense, winning another Gold Glove Award. That was the fourth Gold Glove of his career.

An 11-year veteran of the Tampa Bay Rays and Blue Jays, Kiermaier is a lifetime .249 hitter with 90 homers and 352 RBI. He's also stolen 126 career bags.
