Toronto Blue Jays Set Notorious Franchise Record After Bad Loss to Astros

The Toronto Blue Jays got beat by the Houston Astros on Wednesday in another lopsided affair, 8-0. With another poor offensive showing, the Jays set a franchise record for offensive futility in the early going.

The Toronto Blue Jays got beat by the Houston Astros on Wednesday night, 8-0, to fall to 3-4 on the young season. Two days after being no-hit by Ronel Blanco, the Jays got one-hit by Cristian Javier and a quartet of Astros' relievers.

In the losing effort, Toronto set a franchise record for offensive futility in the early going.

Per @StatsCentre on social media:

Fewest hits recorded as a team through the first 7 games of a season in franchise history (1977-present):

38 in 2024 (Thanks to collecting just 1 in tonight's 8-0 loss to the Astros)
43 in 1981
45 in 2019
46 in 1998
47 in 2017
50 in 2014
50 in 2021
52 in 1997
52 in 2016

What's even more frustrating is that the Jays' offense is supposed to be its calling card. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, George Springer and others, Toronto is supposed to have one of the most vaunted lineups in all of baseball.

In addition to the offensive frustration, Chris Bassitt struggled on the mound, going 4.1 innings and allowing four earned runs on nine hits and three walks. He's now 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA this season.

The Blue Jays will enjoy an off day on Thursday before staying on the road one more time for a series beginning on Friday. Toronto will visit the red-hot Yankees for three games at Yankee Stadium.

Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (0-1, 6.23 ERA) will pitch against righty Marcus Stroman (1-0, 0.00 ERA) on Friday at 1:05 p.m. ET.

Toronto will have its home opener on April 8 against the Seattle Mariners.
