Veteran INF Agrees to Deal with Toronto Blue Jays, Will Have a Chance to Earn Prominent Role

According to Robert Murray of Fansided, the Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to terms with free agent infielder Eduardo Escobar.

Per Murray:

Free-agent infielder Eduardo Escobar is moving toward a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The Blue Jays have Vladimir Guerrero Jr. penciled in at first base and Bo Bichette solidified at shortstop but second base and third base are still up for grabs, so there's a chance that Escobar could earn himself a roster spot - or starting spot - still.

Escobar will have stiff competition as Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Davis Schneider and Santiago Espinal are also in the mix for infield spots. Kiner-Falefa is a former Gold Glover at third base, so he would seem to have the lead in that battle, but it's not official yet.

The 35-year-old Escobar is a 13-year veteran who has played for the Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels.

He made the All-Star Game with the Diamondbacks in 2021 and is a lifetime .253 hitter with a .305 on-base percentage. He hit a career-high 35 homers back in 2019 but is coming off a tough year in which he hit just six homers in 99 games for the Mets and Angels.

The Blue Jays finished third in the American League East last season and advanced to the playoffs for the second straight year. They were swept in the wild card round by the Minnesota Twins, marking the second straight year they were swept in that round.
