Arizona Diamondbacks designated hitter Pavin Smith broke the club's narrow 2-1 lead wide open in the top of the seventh inning Monday night, when he launched the first grand slam of his career, off St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Andre Pallente.

The blast was Smith's first home run of the season.

The Diamondbacks held a 1-0 lead from the first inning, until the bottom of the sixth. A double from catcher Willson Contreras scored Brendan Donovan, knotting the game up at 1-1.

Arizona exploded for a five-run inning in the top of the seventh, with Ketel Marte ripping a solo home run, before Smith emptied the bases.

The Cardinals entered Monday's game standing at 7-9, off to a slow start, despite entering the season as heavy favorites to repeat as National League Central division champions.

The Diamondbacks entered Monday with a 9-7 record, atop the National League West standings. Since their inaugural season in 1998, the Diamondbacks have won the NL West division five times. The club has not won a division title since 2011. The Diamondbacks last reached the postseason in 2017, when they defeated the Colorado Rockies in the National League Wild Card game.
