In a World Baseball Classic semifinal for the ages, Team Japan third baseman Munetaka Murakami ripped a clutch, two-run, walk-off double to defeat Team Mexico 6-5, clinching a trip to the WBC championship game, where Japan will meet Team USA.

Mexico got off to an early 3-0 lead, thanks to a three-run home run from second baseman Luis Urias in the top of the fourth inning.

Japan was unable to plate any runs against Team Mexico starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval. Sandoval held Japan scoreless over 4.1 innings pitched, allowing just four hits and one walk, striking out six.

Then, in the seventh, Masataka Yoshida launched a game-tying, three-run homer off JoJo Romero with two outs, making it 3-3.

Mexico took the lead back, and with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth, Murakami delivered the knockout blow to Team Mexico.

Team Mexico was just three outs away from reaching the World Baseball Classic championship game; now, they'll go home emptyhanded. Still, they should keep their heads held high. Team Mexico had never made it to the semifinals of the World Baseball Classic prior to 2023.

Japan will face Team USA in the WBC championship game Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. ET at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida.

Team Japan will try to win its third World Baseball Classic title, after winning the first two WBC events in 2006 and 2009. Meanwhile, Team USA is trying to repeat as champions, having won the event for the first time in 2017. It should make for a great final.
