The Boston Red Sox ownership group and Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom have taken their lumps from the fanbase over the last several years.

The team has finished last in the American League in two of the four years under Bloom's leadership and has earned a reputation as not being willing to spend on high-priced free agents. After all, the team didn't pony up to keep Mookie Betts and dealt him to the Dodgers. They also didn't re-sign Xander Bogaerts.

And while they did sign Trevor Story and Masataka Yoshida in consecutive offseasons, and locked up Rafael Devers too, it hasn't been enough for fans that have wanted them to go after the likes of Carlos Correa, Marcus Semien, Jacob deGrom, Justin Verlander or Aaron Judge.

But while the Sox group hasn't spend big on the on-field product, they are apparently spending big to upgrade the amenities for the team at Fenway Park.

Not bad. Not bad. The Red Sox will get to use their new clubhouse on Thursday as they welcome the Baltimore Orioles to town for a three-game set. The Sox won 78 games last year and finished last in the American League East but hope that they can improve this year after signing Yoshida to a five-year deal, and bringing in pitcher Corey Kluber. They also beefed up their bullpen by adding Chris Martin, Joely Rodriguez (currently injured) and Kenley Jansen.

They'll need all those acquisitions to hit, plus they'll need contributions from rookie Tristan Casas if they want to hang tough in a very competitive AL East that saw three teams get to the playoffs a season ago.

The Sox and Orioles open Thursday at 2:10. Here's more video from Gorman...
