Michigan high school track and field top performers of the week (April 24-30)

Here are some of the candidates for SBLive's Michigan Athlete of the Week

The following athletes will be included in this weeks' SBLive Michigan Athlete of the Week Poll.


Destin Piggee, Muskegon High School

Junior Destin Piggee couldn’t be caught on the track for Muskegon. In their meet against Zeeland West and Muskegon Mona Shores, Piggee ran a lightning fast 100m dash time of 10.80 seconds for a first place finish, marking the sixth fastest time in the state in that event among the men’s division, as well as ran the 200m dash for another first place finish, and participated in the 4x100 relay where he contributed to a first place finish. 

On Thursday against Grand Rapids Union, Holland, and Muskegon Reeths-Puffer, Piggee took a first place finish in the 200m run, marking a personal record and the seventh fastest time in that event in the state in the men’s division. Piggee would also take first place finishes in the 100m dash, and the 4x100 relay.

Benne Anderson, Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills

Benne Anderson of Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills had himself a performance at the GR Elite Challenge. Anderson would finish in first place in the 1600m run with a time of 4:07.33, marking a personal record and the best time in the state in that event this year among the men’s division, first place in the one mile run with a time of 4:08.62, marking another personal record, and first place in the 3,200m run with a time of 9:24.71, marking the sixth best time in that event in the state.

Owen Slavens, Three Oaks River Valley

For the second consecutive week, junior Owen Slavens was impactful for Three Oaks River Valley in the BCS White Jamboree. Slavens finished in first place in the 100m dash with a time of 11.84 seconds, first place in the 200m run with a time of 24.56, and first place in the 400m run with a time of 54.49. 

Slavens also participated in the 4x400 relay where he helped contribute to a first place finish.

Jaiden Reed, Detroit U-D Jesuit

Senior Jaiden Reed had a great performance for Detroit U-D Jesuit last week at the 9th Courageous Invitational. Reed would finish first place in the 100m dash with a time of 10.77 seconds, which marked the fourth fastest time in the state among the men’s division, first place in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:29.75, the fifth fastest time in the state this year for the men’s division, and first place in the 4x400 relay for the third fastest time in the state this year in the men’s division (3:23.22).

Henry Shaieb, Ann Arbor Skyline

Henry Shaieb had a good performance for Ann Arbor Skyline at the Brighton Bulldog Invitational. Shaieb took a first place finish in the 200m run with a time of 22.72, marking a personal record, and first place in the 400m run with a time of 49.73, marking another personal record and the sixth fastest time in that event among the men’s division in the state. 

Shaieb also helped contribute to a fifth place finish in the 4x200 relay.

Annika Sandman, Lowell High School

Annika Sandman was great for Lowell in the GR Elite Challenge. Sandman finished in first place in the 3200m run with a time of 10:31.45, marking a personal best and the fastest time in the state in that event, second place in the 1600m run with a time of 4:57.51, marking the seventh fastest time in the state in that event, and second place in the one mile with a time of 4:59.34.

Jayla Dace, Detroit Renaissance

Sophomore Jayla Dace was electric on the track for Detroit Renaissance on Friday in the 9th Courageous Invitational. 

Dace took first place in the 100m dash with a personal record time of 12.20 seconds, marking the second fastest time in the women’s division thus far this year in that event in the state of Michigan. 

Dace then took second place in the 200m run with a time of 25.50 seconds, marking the fifth fastest time in the women’s division this year in that event in the state, and second place in the 4x200 relay with the second fastest time this year in the state in the women’s division (1:41.56).

Aiden Harrand, Buckley High School

Junior runner Aiden Harrand showed out for Buckley last week at the Reed City Coyote Invitational. 

Harrand took first place in the 800m run with a time of 2:11.46, marking a personal record and the second fastest time this year in that event in the state in the women’s division. 

She would also finish first in the 1600m run in 4:53.52, marking another personal record and second fastest time for the women’s division thus far this year, and another first place finish in the 3200m run with a time of 10:54.90, marking the eighth fastest time in the women’s division in the state this year. 

Harrand would also compete in the 4x400 relay where she contributed to a first place finish.

Rachel Forsyth, Ann Arbor Pioneer

Junior runner Rachel Forsyth put on a showing last week for Ann Arbor Pioneer. On Tuesday against Monroe and Saline, Forsyth took first place in the 400m run with a time of 56.78, marking the fastest time in the state in that event in the women’s division. 

Forsyth would also take first place in the 800m run, the 4x400 relay, and the 4x800 relay.

Kamryn Tatum, West Bloomfield High School

Freshman Kamryn Tatum had a historical week for West Bloomfield. On Wednesday against Seaholm, Tatum would finish first place in the 100m dash with a time of 12.12 seconds, marking a personal record and best time so far this year in that event in the state of Michigan for the women's division. 

Tatum would also compete in the 400m run where she finished in first place with a time of 58.27, marking another personal record, and the 200m run where finished in first place again (25.39). On Saturday in the Invitational, Tatum would finish in first place in the 200m dash with a time of 24.86, marking yet again another personal record and best time of the year yet in the state of Michigan for the women’s division. 

Tatum would also compete in the 100m dash, 4x100 relay, and the 4x200 relay where she earned first place finishes in all.
