Camdenton's Angel Dickerson sweeps Missouri Class 5 sprint championships
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Angel Dickerson was prepared to lose.
That was the mindset the Camdenton High School senior took into the Class 5 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash finals on Saturday at Jefferson City High School’s Adkins Stadium.
It worked. The Lakers’ standout sprinter swept the two events on Saturday, winning the 100 in a personal-best and Class 5 meet record 10.44 seconds and then taking the 200 in 21.53 a few hours later.
“I was preparing myself to lose, for sure, because all season I’ve been trying to be that guy, be that dude, No. 1 all the time, but just because I lost last year doesn’t mean I don’t deserve to lose this year,” Dickerson said of his mindset going into the 100 final. “That’s what I was applying to my brain. And, because of that, it allowed me to be less nervous, less anxious, and I ran my best race I’ve ever ran.”
Dickerson, who won the Class 4 state title in the 200 last year and finished fourth in the 100, won both races on Saturday by the narrowest of margins.
In the 100, Liberty junior Dominic Revels was right behind Dickerson at 10.45. It was so close that the winner of the race wasn’t immediately clear.
In the 200, a few hours after the 100, Rock Bridge senior Casey Hood pushed Dickerson as hard as he could and crossed the line in 21.57.
“I kept having the same mindset and it got me through, it got me to first place,” Dickerson said. “Casey was catching me a little bit and mid-race I was just thinking, you know, if he gets first place it makes sense, he deserves it. But towards the end I started gaining, right after I started thinking about it, I started gaining a little more and I got first place.”
And it got him two of the most prestigious medals awarded at Adkins Stadium.
Dickerson, who will continue his career at Indiana State next year, was asked if he thought that could be possible after Camdenton was moved up from Class 4 to Class 5 this year.
“One hundred percent,” said Dickerson, who became the first male athlete at Camdenton to win three individual state track championships. “Anything is possible. I never hold myself low. I keep my goals high always. If I can reach it, if I feel like I can reach it, I’m going to be crazy enough to go for it. This is nothing.”
