Sam Briscoe had planned to be at Kirkwood for a long time.

That plan changed.

Briscoe, 27, is now leaving Kirkwood after just one season to take over at Christian Brothers College High School, where he was announced as the new basketball coach on Tuesday afternoon.

"I am humbled to be named the next head coach at CBC High School,” Briscoe said in a press release. “It is an honor and privilege that I will not take lightly. CBC has a rich history of pursuing excellence both on the court and in the classroom, and I am excited to be a part of a program whose expectation is to be exceptional."

In his first year as a varsity head coach, Briscoe led the Pioneers to a 24-3 record that included opening the season with 20 straight victories. The Pioneers, who went 9-14 the previous season, had impressive tournament victories at MICDS and Parkway West during their long win streak.

Kirkwood’s turnaround season ended with a 39-37 loss to Jackson in the Class 6 District 1 championship game. Jackson went on to finish fourth at state.

A standout point guard at Duchesne High School in St. Charles, Briscoe played two seasons at Rockhurst University before finishing his academic career at the University of Missouri.

He spent a year as an assistant coach at CBC rival De Smet High School before moving on to Division II Drury University, where he spent three years as an assistant coach.

Briscoe now takes over at CBC following Justin Tatum’s departure from the Cadets one month earlier.

A 1997 CBC graduate, Tatum led the Cadets to six Metro Catholic Conference championships and a pair of state titles during 10 seasons in charge, with the latest title coming in 2022. He left to take a position with the Illawarra Hawks of Australia’s NBL professional league.

CBC went 18-11 in Tatum’s final season and lost in the Class 6 District 3 championship game to rival Chaminade. The Cadets top three scorers were juniors Nassir Binion (13.3 points per game) and Anthony Gause (12.8) and sophomore Terron Garrett (8.4), who could provide a strong nucleus for CBC next season if all three return.
