FENTON, Mo. – Seeking to avenge its Week 2 loss a year ago, the Rockwood Summit football team jumped on visiting Marquette early on Friday night.
Led by running back Elijah Stevens and the quarterback-receiver combo of Grant Gibson and Kamron Fowler, the host Falcons scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and four in the first half to take a 27-point lead at halftime.
Marquette rallied in the second half, but the halftime deficit was too much to overcome as Summit improved to 2-0 with a 27-21 victory.
Stevens, a senior running back, finished with 183 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Gibson, a senior, threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns (against one interception). Fowler, a junior, caught six passes for 65 yards and two scores.
Marquette sophomore quarterback Caden Throneberry connected with senior wide receiver Tyree Bonnett for three touchdowns in the second half.
The Mustangs cut the deficit to 27-21 with 25.2 seconds left, but the ensuing onsides kick was recovered by the Falcons to secure the victory.
