Chaminade sinks Vianney on Jacob Robinson's last-second 3-pointer
KIRKWOOD, MISSOURI – Jacob Robinson isn't sure the last time he made a game-winning shot.
"Probably middle school," he said.
But the Chaminade junior guard said he is built for those type of moments and he proved that on Friday night.
Robinson knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing as time expired to give the visiting Red Devils a thrilling 64-61 Metro Catholic Conference victory at Vianney.
"I know my team relies on me very much and I know my coach believes if my feet are set, let that fly and that's exactly what happened," Robinson said. "My teammate Jamo (Jamison White), he was driving and he trusted me to shoot that shot. That's my brother so I've got him."
Robinson knocked down the shot right in front of Chaminade's bench and student section, which set off a frenzied celebration that included the Red Devils fans storming the visiting court.
"It's a spirited game among MCC rivals and Marianist schools," Chaminade coach Frank Bennett said. "We'd make a play and then they'd make a play. They'd make a play, we'd make a play. That's what makes it fun. We were just fortunate at the very end to make one more play than they did."
Junior guard Colin Perry led Chaminade (14-9 overall, 5-2 in MCC play) with 15 points, while Robinson finished with nine (on three 3-pointers) and sophomore forward Jamison White added eight.
"Before this, we lost to them by three," Robinson said. "This time, we came for an elimination game for a chance for the MCC title."
Chaminade is ranked 18th in the SBLive Missouri Power 25 basketball rankings, while Vianney (18-5, 4-2) is ranked sixth.
Junior guard Luke Walsh and sophomore guard Eddie Smajic led Vianney with 21 points apiece. Sophomore center Symon Ghai added 10 points.
"I thought it was a great MCC game, just kind of a classic Friday night MCC contest," Vianney coach Kevin Walsh said. "They made the shot, the play at the end of the game, to win it. We had the ball, we didn't get a shot, and that's going to cost you. Their kid stepped up and made a big shot. A month ago we made a big shot over at their place, so it was very similar."
