La Grande’s Tommy Belding remains undefeated against in-state foes (Reser’s TOC 144 pounds)

“I’m excited to go win a state title now.”

A year ago, Tommy Belding played a big part in La Grande’s successful defense of its Class 4A state title. 

The then-freshman entered the state tournament as a No. 8 seed at 132 pounds, but after losing to eventual champion Jacob Sieminski of Sweet Home in the quarterfinals, he fought through the consolation bracket to place third — beating another Sweet Home wrestler, Jacob Landtroop, in the medal round. 

Saturday, the Tigers sophomore showed he’ll be an integral part of their quest to win a third consecutive title next month, winning the team’s only individual title at the 22nd Reser’s Tournament of Champions with a 10-6 decision over Crater’s Jaxon Godley at Hillsboro’s Liberty High School.

Belding went 5-0 over the weekend to remain undefeated against in-state opponents and improve to 27-4 this season. 

“I’m very excited that I won,” he said. “It was one of my goals at the beginning of the season, and I’m just happy to check it off my list.”

Belding trailed 4-3 after the first period, then gave up a reversal to Godley to open the second round. Within seconds, he’d scored a reversal and three near-fall points to take control of the match. 

“I like making it exciting,” Belding said. “I’m excited to go win a state title now.”
