Uncommitted sophomore Hannah Wells delivered complete game pitching, two insurance runs in seventh inning homer

Coahoma had a shot at redemption. Hannah Wells delivered.

The uncommitted sophomore pitcher blasted a two-run nail-in-the-coffin home run in the top of the seventh inning to help Coahama (36-3) pull away late to win the Texas (UIL) Class 3A state championship on Thursday.

The Bulldogettes beat Santa Gertrudis 4-2 at University of Texas in Austin, a year after losing in the 3A state championship to Hallettstville, 6-5.

Wells, who was named the game's MVP by voting media members, also pitched a complete game five-hitter with four strikeouts and two earned runs allowed. She pitched a one-hit complete game shutout in the semifinals Wednesday against Emory Rains with 11 strikeouts and four walks and finishes 20-1 on the season.

On Thursday, Wells was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and was walked twice. She said after the game she was surprised Santa Gertrudis pitched to her in the seventh inning after walking her twice before, and that her home run came on her "favorite pitch" — low and inside.
