The Dodgers have had uncharacteristically bad pitching this season. In both the starting rotation and in the bullpen. It hasn't been all bad all the time, but when this staff surrenders runs, it tends to do it in bulk.

As the trade deadline approaches, the expectation around the industry is that the front office will be big time buyers on the pitching market. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked yesterday if the team needs starting pitching help in the coming months.

He answered in a very Dave Roberts manner.

"I don't think it's a need. I think every year any team that's in the race at this deadline, there's always talk about potentially adding more pitching. So, I think our guys have shown in the past that if there's a need we'll fill that hole."

That last part is spot on. Andrew Friedman and the rest of the front office has never shied away from making big splashes on the trade market, when needed.

In 2017 they needed a starting pitcher and they went out and got Yu Darvish. In 2018 they needed a shortstop, so they acquired Manny Machado. By 2021, they needed starting pitching and help at second base. Come on down, Max Scherzer and Trea Turner.

When there are clear needs, the Dodgers will address them. At this point in the season, despite being 3 games behind the Arizona Diamondback for first place in the NL West, the club still has time to assess what it has in house before exploring out of the organization.
