Dodgers Acquire Top 10 Prospect From Yankees for 2 Players

LA officially clears room on their 40-man roster.

After signing free agent Shohei Ohtani to a record-setting deal, the Dodgers need to clear spots on their 40-man roster. They also have relief pitcher Joe Kelly reportedly re-signed, as well, so LA needs to clear two spots to officially add them.

LA just protected pitchers Nick Frasso and Landon Knack from the Rule 5 Draft, as well as catcher Hunter Feduccia. They were all added to the 40-man roster,

It looks like the Dodgers are doing just that, and they are making a trade with the New York Yankees to make it happen. The Dodgers have acquired shortstop Trey Sweeney from New York in exchange for lefty reliever Victor Gonzalez and infielder Jorbit Vivas.

This clears the way for the team to bring both Kelly and Ohtani onto the roster. Sweeney was the Yankees 8th ranked prospect, and Vivas was the 10th ranked for the Dodgers. Sweeney is a left-hand-hitting shortstop who is only 23 years old.

Last season for the Yankees in Double-A, he hit .252 with 13 home runs and 49 runs batted in. He should provide the team with more depth and is great at making hard contact with the ball.

This won't be the only move the Dodgers make this offseason, especially if they continue to add to the roster. Expect to see more moves coming down the pipeline soon.
